To start off this blog post: I actually can’t remember the last time my skin was completely spot-free. I don’t have problems with acne but what bothers me about my face is the fact that I have blemishes and no matter how hard I try, I just can’t get rid of them. I’m feeling really depressed about my skin sometimes but I will never give up trying to find products that actually help. Having a daily skin care routine is important for everyone but finding the perfect routine for yourself can feel like mission impossible. There are so many different cleansers, exfoliants, treatments etc. it can all get a bit overwhelming. The key is: less is more. I try to use natural products and avoid any harsh ingredients all over my face, I only apply treatments on single spots. In my experience the best care for blemish prone skin is to be gentle. I have oily/combination skin, it’s extremely oily in the t-zone but also dry in other areas. I find it quite tricky to care for as you’re dealing with two skin types in one. My skin is nowhere near perfect but right now I’m at a stage where I’d like to share my favourite products with you guys as they’ve helped me a lot.
I always struggle to find cleansers that suit my skin perfectly, I tried everything between cheap and high end but most cleansers specifically designed for oily skin tend to dry out my complexion really bad. I’ve been using the Alverde Healing Clay Cleanser for a few weeks now and I absolutely love it. I really like Alverde as a brand and I’ve tried a bunch of different products already, it’s vegan, cruelty free and mostly contains natural ingredients. It’s got a lovely consistency somewhere between a gel and a cream. It lathers up quite nicely and most importantly, doesn’t irritate or dry out my skin at all. This cleanser is antibacterial and supposed to unclog pores while still being gentle enough to not dry out the skin. I use this in the mornings and evenings with my Foreo Luna Mini. Toning is probably my favourite part of the whole skincare regime. I love the refreshing feeling on my face afterwards. My two favourite toning lotions are the Bioderma Sebium Micellar Water and The Body Shop Tea Tree Toner. Bioderma Sebium H2O is a toner-like cleanser and makeup remover specifically made for oily skin. It never causes me any breakouts and it does have a good balancing effect for my oily t-zone. Whenever I feel like my skin needs a little bit more antibacterial benefits I opt for The Body Shop Tea Tree Toner, but only when my skin gets very oily. I really like the strong tea tree smell and I do think it helps to prevent breakouts and blackheads.
Since I struggle with oily skin I need to use a moisturizer with a mattifying effect. My favourite one for the day time is the L’Occitane Angelica Ultra Matte Fluid. This fluid moisturizer is ideal for my annoying combination skin. It contains Angelica extracts that help to rehydrate the skin and protect it from impurities. The zinc helps to eliminate sebum, which is the main cause for blackheads and breakouts in general. For night time I like to use a really thick moisturizer with Urea. I use a cheap one from my local drugstore and it does the job really. I sometimes mix it with my The Body Shop Serum-In-Oil (review) and when I wake up in the mornings my skin feels just amazing!
Two words: Benzoyl Peroxide! It’s a really powerful ingredient that’s effective against all kinds of blemishes such as blackheads, whiteheads or even big red pimples. It basically kills bacteria rather than simply slowing down their growth. It works very quickly and I prefer it over Salicylic Acid. Whenever I get a really painful spot I just put a tiny bit of Benzoyl Peroxide on the affected area and et voilá it’s almost completely gone within a few hours. My favourite face mask to get rid of impurities has always been and will always be the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay.
My top tips for healthy skin
One of the most common misconceptions about oily skin is that you should avoid applying oils to it. Completely wrong! Applying oils to the skin can actually help rebalance its natural oil production. By adding a little oil to your skin after cleansing, you’re basically telling it that it has enough, and can slow down on the oil production. My favourite oils are castor oil and coconut oil.
A huge number of skin problems are caused by eating the wrong foods, so it’s always worth looking at your diet if simple skincare switches don’t work. I’m a big believer in eating healthy to keep the skin calm and clear. Avoiding refined sugar and unhealthy fats will help to minimize sebum production as well!
